SWIMMING WITHOUT WATER

Once again crashing
to earth and through,
deep into soil where
you grab fistfuls of clay
and mold figures
as you fall further,
deeper. Magma pulls,
calling your body weight
almost by name, chanting
grinding, gravitational songs
that slowly drive you
richly insane just before
you burn in your mother’s
deep red heart.

HERACLITUS’ STREAM

Wading back
into the stream
that is time,
you notice
it’s not the stream
you left days ago.

It’s colder,
for starters,
and messier.
The weight of
your father on your shoulders
forces your feet deeper.

It will take
some getting used to.
